The government announced today that the next election will be held on March 31st, 2024. A milestone in Jonasland history, the election will be the first held under new political reforms passed by the parliament, in October 2023 and February 2024.
In this election, the presidency and legislature will be contested separately. Independent candidates may run for either position. Under the new election rules, voters will vote for one candidate for president as well as a party that they think should be elected to parliament. Parliamentary seats will be calculated through the D'Hondt system, and filled through party lists.
Party and candidate registration will be open until March 25th, at 6:00pm NZT. Two parties are registered to run - the SDP and the JRM - with the election largely shaping up to be a rematch of June 2023.
The polls open on March 27th. The Jonasland Tribune will have up-to-date coverage as it happens.
