Five days ago, on March 11th, 2024, parliament passed a major electoral act, the Political and Electoral Reform Act of February 2024. The bill sprouted from proposals made by TheAllSeeingBird of the JRM, and was added upon by president JVTA of the SDP.
The new act makes historic democratic reforms to the election rulebook. Under the new laws, the presidential and legislative ballots will be split into two, allowing parties to choose whether they want to run for either position. This also opens the door for independent candidates to place their name down.
The act comes months after the Election Reform Act of October 2023, which saw a larger round of reforms created following disputes over the result and handling of the October 2023 election, that saw JVTA return to the presidency.
Speaking to the Tribune this morning, president JVTA lauded the bill's passing. "I'm pleased to know that we're making a fairer and more democratic Jonasland. The people deserve a say, no matter what side of the political spectrum they may stand on."
It is not yet known when the next election is, though rumours indicate it may occur at some point in April.
