The Potato Council has passed a bill unanimously that will change the electoral system of the Potato Empire.
The bill is dubbed the "Electoral Voting Reforms Act 2025". It reforms the electoral system of Potato into a system similar to MMP (mixed member proportional). Under the new system, seats are not assigned based on towns but rather regions. As an example, Bird Land and Quartzonia are being merged into the region of Tatopia (named for the nearby national park). As well as this, a new "party vote" has been added. The party vote assigns seats to parties based on the percentage they received in the vote.
The bill was proposed by the UCP. It received support from the Potato Democrats, the UCP's coalition partner. Voting on the bill began yesterday. The bill has received enough votes to pass (5 in favour, 0 against, 1 absent) and will at some point be presented to the Potato King for implementation.
"I'm feeling confident that the new electoral system devised by UCP will be brought into law," RoryRDMB, leader of the UCP, told PMI. "I'm very glad to help bring about the long awaited changes to the Potato electoral system. I hope that people will find the new system more fair for voters. Any issues found with the new system will be sorted out as they appear."
Potato is not the first country to make reforms to its political system. Jonasland passed a similar act in 2023, that split its ballot into two, effectively creating a system where the president and parliament are elected separately. More recently, Carrot enacted reforms that turned the country into a constitutional monarchy; elections in the country are due to happen later this year.
